Sumiは、日本の徳島に伝統的に伝わる弁当箱・菓子箱の「遊山箱」のリデザインです。
遊山箱は、持ち運びが出来るように2重の箱になった3段の重箱です。
古くからの遊山箱に必ず空いている側面の穴の位置を、箱の隅に変えることで、通常の遊山箱で困難だった内箱の片手での取り出しや、ハンドル・蓋の美しい収まりを実現しています。
大量生産・大量消費の世界の中で、職人が持つ優れた技術が失われようとしています。
地場産業・職人のクラフトマンシップのためにデザインが出来ることは何か。
"Sumi" is the redesign product of "Yusan-bako" which is the
traditional picnic box / sweets box descended in Tokushima
prefecture; one of the islands located at the western part of Japan.
"Yusan-bako" is a three-tiered food box with two-tired outer box
for the portable use.
The traditional "Yusan-bako" has two holes on both sides of the outer
box. Therefore, you had to use both hands to open them.
However, Sumi allows to pull the inner boxes by only one hand due to the change of the position of these holes to the edge of the outer box.
This change leads to the excellent design of the handle and the lid.
The increasing productions and consumptions have been remarkable these days; therefore, we have been losing the outstanding works of the craftsmen's technique. I wonder what I can do to uphold both craftsmen's works and the local industry. Sumi is accomplished by the collaboration with wood work- craftsmen in Tokushima prefecture. This will promote new challenges for them.

徳島の木工技術と新しいデザインへの挑戦を象徴する形となっています。
ちょっと高価なお弁当箱ではありますが、これからの紅葉の季節に、こんなステキな器に入ったお弁当を持ってお寺めぐりとかしたら日本の風情が感じられますね。
